The push for ever increasing bandwidth demands and the requirements for flexibility, cost effectiveness, security, quality of service and rapid connection times has seen the backbone Transport networks of today come under pressure to adapt and evolve in order to meet these demands. The growth, functions and availability of modern networks are also no longer the realm of Telecommunications and Cable TV giants but are available to many individual organisations, individuals and governments trying to deploy services and increase connectivity to individuals and organisations.
One of these services, that consumes a lot of bandwidth resource, is video. Video comes in many different formats and methods and provides a very rich source of entertainment, stimulation and just plain relaxation. Challenges exist from both video service providers and Transport network providers to ensure that the service has good quality, provides relevant up to date content and caters for an ever increasing variety of needs.
